With volumetric grading, such properties as material ductilityor strength, colour, density, etc., can be designed very much like the form of the object itself, as layers of 3D raster data. Any number of layers of spatial data can be manipulated or “graded” according to defined patterns, from simple linear gradients to more complex mappings.
Volumetric grading enables tailored material distribution for potentially greater mechanical performance, improved resource allocation, or novel aesthetic expressions.
